Quilt Commissions

I accept a limited number of quilt commission each year. Timeline and cost vary depending on the project. A few things to keep in mind:

DESIGN I recommend viewing my portfolio for examples of my work to determine if we are a good fit for collaboration. I tend to blend traditional patterns with scrappy, asymmetry.

MATERIALS & METHODS I repurpose textiles instead of buying new fabric. You can request specific colors or patterns from my available stash or you can give me woven (not knit) textiles to use (i.e. old flannel shirts, bed sheets, curtains, etc.) I also hand quilt all of my quilts. This adds time/labor and therefore cost to my quilts, but it is an important part of my practice.

PROCESS I’d love to hear about your project vision — consultations are free! I will provide some feedback, realistic expectations, and a range of price options.

  • DESIGN PHASE - Before any cutting or sewing takes place, I will sketch the design/pattern with measurements and a block/piecing plan.

  • CUTTING, PIECING, & QUILTING - If/when the design is approved, I will begin constructing your quilt. I will share photos along the way and we can arrange an in-progress studio visit if needed. Depending on the size of the project, this process can take 2-6 weeks.

  • BINDING & FINISHING - trimming and binding the edges is a relatively quick process. You also have the option of requesting a fabric sleeve on the back of the quilt for mounting on the wall. I can also provide a dowel/rod for mounting, OR provide hanging/display advice.

COST I will share a range of budget options during project consultation. A good estimating tool for functional quilt commissions is $20-$25 per square foot. Overall cost is affected by:

  • size of project - this is an obvious one. Baby (approx. 3’x4’) quilts range from $200-300; Throw quilts (approx. 5’x6’)

  • complexity of piecing - small pieces, triangles, diamonds, curves, etc. take more time and are more costly; large pieces, squares, and rectangles are simpler and less labor intensive

  • complexity of quilt stitching - simple overall quilting (i.e. wide spacing between quilting, straight lines, etc.) incurs less cost. Complex quilting (pictorial, dense lines) is more costly.

  • materials - most of my fabrics are ‘found’ and cost next to nothing. I generally do NOT include materials in the cost of a quilt. The exception is when I use my hand-dyed fabrics, which add material & labor cost to the fabric.

PAYMENT PLANS I require a partial payment at the start of quilt construction, and final balance payment at the time of quilt completion and delivery/pick up. Payment plans are available if needed. (i.e. monthly installments, etc.)

Preferred payment methods are check, cash, or venmo, but we can arrange alternate methods after our initial consultation.
